The Answers to Frequently Asked Questions About This Rare & Aggressive Form of Cancer

What is mesothelioma and what causes the condition?

Mesothelioma is a rare but aggressive form of cancer caused by excessive exposure to asbestos.

Asbestos is a heat-resistant fibrous silicate mineral that can be woven into fabrics and is used in fire-resistant and insulating materials such as brake linings.

Asbestos was widely used in construction, manufacturing, and fireproofing until the 1980s when it was found to be toxic and then heavily regulated.

Despite its dangers, the material can still be found in older homes, businesses, and even in schools and universities across the country.

Just how dangerous is mesothelioma?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, killing an estimated 605,213 people in 2021 alone.

Cancer researchers determine how deadly a specific form of cancer is by looking at the five-year survival rate.

This refers to the number of people who haven’t succumbed to cancer five years after diagnosis.

While the five-year survival rate of all cancers is 68%, the five-year survival rate of mesothelioma is approximately 12%.

This makes mesothelioma one of the deadliest forms of cancer in the US.
